How GoalScreen® works
Start of period
- Set a one- or two-week target for your customer pipeline, sales, cash flow, or other goal
- List the two or three biggest bets you’re making — the drivers like features and marketing activities you think matter most
- Estimate or guess the impact of best- or worst-case progress for each bet over the next week or so on your target
End of period
- Enter your actual result against your target
- Rate the progress for each bet on a scale of worst case, disappointing, okay, good, or best case
- GoalScreen® recommends which bet is having more impact than you thought, which ones you should drop, and whether you should test new ones
After six periods
- You should have a unique north-star metric with strong predictive power for the next phase of your business or project
- In a randomized control trial with 30-40 startups, sales growth of GoalScreen® users was 38 percentage points higher than a control group’s over a year

Binta Shuaibu has pivoted her fashion company Vintage Colette to insulate it from a local economic downturn over the eight months she and I have been using the GoalScreen® process to test and revise her strategy.
At the beginning of the process, economic conditions could depress monthly sales by as much as two thirds.
